How Maytag Dishwashers Work
Dishwashers work in similar ways. They have three main areas - the motor and pump system; the controls, switches, valves and solenoids; and the interior.
Components of your Maytag Dishwasher
The Motor and Pump System
Your dishwasher has one motor. The motor is attached to a pump, and this pump forces the water up into the sprayer arms. The same pump pushes the water out of the dishwasher and down the drain, during the drain cycle.
The Controls, Switches, Valves, and Solenoids
A dishwasher has at least three, but often six or more controls, switches, valves and solenoids. The following items may fall into this category: timers, selector switches, water-inlet valves, float switches, soap and/or dispensers, drain solenoids, thermostats, soil sensors, door switch, drying fan, and the heating elements. You can find more details about each of these items at the RepairClinic.com's site.
The Interior of your Maytag Dishwasher
Dishwasher interiors contain these items: dish racks, the spray arms, and/or the tower that sprays water at the dishes, the upper part of the pump assembly, and the water filter
Principle: A dishwasher goes through a number of cycles after the dishes are loaded. The timers and controls are similar to self-monitoring systems that make sure the cycle runs smoothly This is the way it works:
- The dishwasher fills itself with water
- The water is heated to the appropriate temperature
- The dishwasher automatically opens the detergent dispenser when the time is right
- The dishwasher shoots the water through jets to get the dishes clean
- The dishwasher drains the dirty water
- The dishwasher sprays more water on the dishes to rinse them
- The dishwasher drains the water again
- The dishwasher heats the air to dry the dishes off (if the user has selected that particular setting)
Keeping your Maytag Dishwasher Well Maintained
- Interior cleaning & deodorizing - The interior of your dishwasher does not need to be cleaned if it is used regularly. If it goes unused for a week or more and begins to mold or to smell bad - clean it by using a special dishwasher cleaner like Glisten. All the products you need for your dishwasher are available on the RepairClinic.com website.
- Exterior cleaning - Clean the exterior of your dishwasher with a damp sponge dipped in warm water and a little dish detergent.
- Dish rack repairs - If the plastic coating wears off the dish racks in your dishwasher, they may corrode and rust. The rust can eventually damage your dishwasher and stain your dishes. Repair kits for all your dishwasher needs can be found at RepairClinic.com.
- Filter cleaning - On many dishwashers there is a filter that needs to be cleaned regularly. If you have this sort of filter, check your owner's manual to find out how to remove and clean it. If the filter has holes in it, replace it to protect the pump and motor seals from particles that may be in the dishwasher.
- Spray arm cleaning - Over time, the small holes in the spray arm(s) of your dishwasher may become clogged with bits of paper, toothpicks, glass, and other particles. Your dishwasher will do a better job of cleaning your dishes if you take a moment to clean out these small holes on a regular bases.
